ART 492/592 Advanced Fine Art Methods

The annual Arts Education Institute (AEI) offers on-campus professional development in arts and learning for South Dakota teachers and administrators Pre-K through 12th grade. However, you don’t have to be an educator to attend AEI-everyone is welcome to enjoy this fun-filled week of learning featuring:

  • Ways to infuse the arts into classrooms
  • Curriculum development
  • Art, choral and music workshops

EDFN 492/592 – Leading Kids to Positive Behaviors and Successful Lives

Credits: 1

Seminar date: Wednesday, August 13th, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Tuition: $40.00 per credit hour

Location: Northern State University Johnson Fine Arts Center or Zoom (for those outside of 30 miles)

About: Scott Ervin has spent 24 years in education, serving as a principal, superintendent, discipline specialist and mentor. Scott currently travels the U.S. with his team; teaching adults how to teach kids to use positive, pro-social behaviors. Scott's work includes demonstrating to educators how to elicit positive behaviors in the classroom and common areas, retrain educators on behavioral techniques, and coach educators in real-time. Scott has published his book, The Classroom Behavior Manual: How to Build Relationships with Students, Share Control, and Teach Positive Behaviors, with the ASCD. Scott writes his nationally syndicated advice column, The Kid Whisperer, which has appeared in national newspapers around the U.S. He has been featured in the Washington Post, USA Today, and on MSN. Participants enrolled in the EDFN 492/592 course will be required to submit a reflection paper by Friday, November 1, 2025.

ART 492/592 – 2025 Art Educator’s Conference

Conference Date: Thursday, October 9th 2025- Saturday, October 11, 2025

Location: Northern State University Johnson Fine Arts Center

Tuition: $40.00 per credit hour 

About: Northern State University’s Art Department will host the 2025 South Dakota College Art Association and Art Education Association State Conference, October 9-11, 2025.  Northern State University’s art faculty are seeking proposals for the conference, which could include artist presentations, curriculum discussions, educational presentations, workshops, and more; these will take place on Friday and Saturday. A block of hotel rooms has been reserved at Fairfield Inn & Suites Aberdeen, SD for $125 a night. Please make a reservation before September 9th. Participants interested in completing the companion course for credit will be required to attend workshop sessions and lectures during the conference, have documentation of attendance signed, and attend artist presentation 6-8 pm on October 10th, and submit a reflection paper by December 1st, 2025. Those interested in the graduate credit will additionally need to submit a lesson plan.
